TLDR built a Chrome site blocker that lets you into distracting sites only after you do some math or simple coding (JS only right now). Philosophically it's a speed bump rather than a hard gate, because you'll eventually tear a gate down but you'll leave a speed bump. I've always eventually removed site blockers, or just had them become a nuisance that I reflexively dismiss before getting to distracting sites. Site blockers don't really reduce the "start navigating to a distracting site" muscle memory, and they eventually just become annoying. Dopamine is a hell of a drug. At the same time, I've been getting frustrated that my intermediate/advanced math skills have atrophied, and becoming more senior in my career (plus AI...) has caused my coding skills to atrophy even further. Finally Got a Paying Customer! For months I kept building features instead of talking to potential users. Nothing happened. I finally changed my approach. I simplified the product, started reaching out to small businesses directly, and focused on solving one problem really well. That got me my first paying customer, and seeing someone actually use something I built felt way better than chasing more features. Design slop is the feeling that tells you a website is purely AI-generated. This is an attempt to classify the design patterns behind it. Applying this scoring to recent ShowHN submissions shows that about a third of the submissions show medium to heavy design slop: https://slopcop.adriankrebs.ch/show How the scoring works: - A headless browser loads each site (Playwright) - A small in-page script analyzes the DOM and reads computed styles - Every pattern is a deterministic CSS or DOM check. There are false positives, but my manual QA run verified it’s maybe 5-10%. Is design slop bad? Not really, just uninspired. After all, the web was never about the fanciest design, and before the AI era, everything looked like Bootstrap. However, there is a difference between trying to craft your own design and just shipping with whatever defaults the LLMs output. And the same has been the case pre-LLM when using CSS/HTML templates. I guess people will get back to crafting beautiful design
